Mary BokMary Bok has always been interested in the magic of words as they relate and give voice to the thought that moves in each of us.
As a child, she kept diaries and picture books that recorded something of her relationship to the world around her. Later, as a young adult, she wrote stories and poems which mirrored this same connectedness; and even later, in the early 1970's, she began work with Ira Progoff, whose approach to journal keeping deepened her explorations.
In the early 1980's Mary met Linda Trichter Metcalf and Tobin Simon, the founders of Proprioceptive Writing. After attending a workshop in 1983, Mary began her own practice and then studied with Tobin and Linda at the Proprioceptive Writing Center, in Rockport and later in Portland, Maine. After a three-year training, she began teaching in 1987, offering workshops, leading group writes, and working with students privately.
Mary has led Proprioceptive Writing workshops at Elderhostels in Maine and New Hampshire, The International Women's Writing Guild conference in Canaan, New York, the Center for Health and Healing in Rockland, Maine, and at her home in Camden. She leads groups each Spring and Fall at the Temenos Retreat Center in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and since 1997 has been doing an annual workshop.
