Mission

The Women's Poetry and Performance Retreat is designed to empower women writers of poetry by providing a safe space for women poets from all racial/ ethnic, cultural and class backgrounds, age, sexual orientation, and styles and levels of writing.  We desire to create a strong intergenerational, cultural and difference appreciating community of women writers, focusing on self healing, community healing, and the use of art as a means of storytelling, healing, social activism, change and service.

Tara Hardy

Tara Hardy is the working-class queer femme poet who writes and teaches in Seattle, Washington. She is the founder and current creative director of Bent, a writing institute for LGBTIQ people based in Seattle. In 2002, she was elected by the people and named by the city council as Seattle's Poet Populist, or poet of the people, and she won the Seattle Grand Slam Champion title in the same year. She holds an MFA from Vermont College in fiction writing, and an MSW from the University of Michigan in community organizing. Read More about Tara Hardy.

Paula Larke

paula larkeIn her passion to promote peace, justice, and integrity, Paula Larke  has trained with CTI (CONNECT Training Institute), Creating a Culture of Peace, The Children’s Creative Response to Conflict, Inc., and the Brecht Forum TOP Lab (Theatre of the Oppressed), and has spent  two decades of community organizing and education training through work with Carpetbag Theatre, Inc.,( Kellogg Foundation, Brushy Fork Institute,) the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, Southern Rural Black Women’s Development Initiative,  the Highlander Center for Research and Education, among many others. jessica care moore photo by corey reese photographyAn internationally renowned poet, publisher, literary activist, performance artist, playwright and actor, Jessica is a five-time Showtime at the Apollo winner.  She was featured on hip-hop mega-star, Nas' "Nastradamus" album, and a returning star of Russell Simmons’ HBO Series, Def Poetry Jam.

After her legendary win on the Apollo stage, jessica Care moore was approached by several book publishing companies, but in 1997, she paved her own path and launched a publishing house -Moore Black Press, and released her first book; "The Words Don't Fit In My Mouth." A few authors later, she followed up with her second collection, "The Alphabet Verses The Ghetto,” and her third, highly anticipated book,” God is Not an American”. Minton Sparks

Her debut live show DVD is yet another ground breaking performance that further proves Sparks is in a category all her own. Sparks peeks over the edge into the warm spot where most would prefer sleeping relatives lie. Open Casket is a raucous, provocative, brilliant one-woman show featuring Minton alongside world-class musicians: guitarist John Jackson, blues pianist Steve Conn, guitar and mandolin virtuoso Pat Flynn and special guest, Irish singing sensation, Maura O'Connell.
