Chauncey Beaty

Chauncey Beaty

Providing a fresh perspective, this wayward scholar is not your average poet. Known for poetry that “does hard work and heart work” in a manner that eludes most academics and in a poetic aesthetic pursued by many writers. Chauncey is a cultural worker translating high theory into accessible vivid imagery by playing with the social imagination of race and gender (its intersections and embodiment). Utilizing confessional poetry and personal narratives, Chauncey also tackles intimate topics pertaining to identity, love, human relationships, and healing.

Chauncey has won numerous poetry slams, but carries the titles of the 2006 “She Slam” winner, a member of a 2006 Columbus, Ohio National Poetry Slam Team, a member of the 2007 Midwest Poetry Slam League, and the 2008 Writer’s Block Individual World Poetry Slam representative. In addition, she is the 2009 Art Amok Grand Slam winner, member of the 2009Art Amok National Poetry Slam Team and Art Amok’s Women of the World Poetry Slam representative for 2009 and 2010. She is a two time Women of the World Poetry Slam finalist, ranking 6th in 2009. Poetry Slam, Inc. currently ranks Chauncey Beaty the 3rd female slam poet in the world.

Chauncey is the founder of Hope Springs Institute’s Annual Women’s Poetry and Performance Retreat. In its third year, this event is dedicated to creating a diverse and intergenerational community of women writers who use their art for self and community healing, activism, change, and service. Chauncey is the only poet to be invited to pop star Usher Raymond’s "Camp New Look," where she taught campers how to write poetry, which was used to remake the 1985 hit “We are the World.” In 2010, she was a featured artist at the Hope Springs Institute’s International Peace Gathering, and was
bestowed the honor of being one of four who reveal the international peace pole.

Chauncey is a proud spokes person for the Greater Than AIDS (GTA) campaign, a movement aimed to elevate the public’s knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS. She has been featured in GTA commercials on NBC, CBS, and Google TV (and its affiliate broadcast stations). Chauncey was a guest on the Michael Eric Dyson Show and featured as the centerfold ad in Heart and Soul Magazine for February 2011 edition.

Chauncey earned a Bachelor of Arts from Winthrop University in Psychology and a Master of Arts in African American and African Studies from The Ohio State University. She is a graduate of numerous leadership, organizational development, and diversity training programs. In 2007, Chauncey was honored by the state of Ohio and Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones for her leadership, service, and participation in the prestigious Ray Miller Institute of Change and Leadership. Chauncey is the Owner and Lead Consultant of Omnific Consulting and Seminars, LLC, which provides transformative experiences for personal success, leadership, artistic and organizational development.
